Seventh-grade Practice Prompt 1:
When opening a checking account, be sure to understand fees and services. For example, avoid providers that charge fees every time you use your ATM card. If interest rates are low, then low service fees are more important than marginally better interest. Watch out for minimum balance service charges.
Try to keep your checking account balance at a minimum but again be careful of minimum balance charges and instead keep the money in a savings or money market account, where you can get higher interest. Banks and credit unions offer checking accounts. Discount brokerage accounts also offer checking, and may give better interest if the money is invested in a money market fund.
